A. Review Strategies for Youth Training Outline
Commissioner Edelhart provided a brief context for the priority around Police Youth Training: since 1012, the YC and community were able to push for and got funding for a youth training, but that somehow fell through in the Police Department. The police department has demonstrated more openness to work on this recently, and Youth Commissioners wanted to have a meeting with some community members on this training.
Members of the community (TAYSF, BMAGIC, Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center, and Coleman Advocates) were present. We reviewed the curriculum agenda from Strategies for Youth. People shared what they liked, recommendations they had, and questions they’d like Strategies for Youth to answer. They also wondered if the training from the Center for Youth Wellness was updated based on the recommendations they provided when they visited.
The Youth Commission heard from the group that they are supportive of the committee’s recommendations to push for the Youth Training, and requesting local hire of youth for youth elements of the training when the time comes. Commissioner Edelhart shared that a demonstration with the Police Chief and Strategies for Youth will hopefully happen soon.
